Dan Peterson school students in front of the school

Timpanogos School District is planning for a dedicated special education facility to serve students currently attending Dan Peterson School and the Alpine Transition and Education Center (ATEC) beginning in July 2027. To meet this timeline and ensure uninterrupted services, the Board must soon determine whether to pursue a new build or remodel an existing facility.

Currently, 137 students living within TSD boundaries rely on these specialized programs, which support a wide range of needs—from highly structured, therapeutic environments to life skills and transition services. Existing facilities will not have sufficient space once the new districts begin operating, making a local solution necessary.

The Board is evaluating multiple options, including a stand-alone special education school or a shared campus model with an elementary school. Several potential sites are under review, each with unique benefits and tradeoffs related to cost, accessibility, timeline, and long-term district needs. No schools are being closed as part of this discussion.

This work is being carefully coordinated with Alpine School District funding and future TSD resources. The Board expects to discuss next steps at its February 11 meeting and welcomes community input.
